George Patrick Long Jr. passed away on March 29, 2025, at his home, after suffering with dementia.
He was born on August 11, 1944, and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., until he moved his young family up to Rockland County. George worked for IBM with Americas/Far East for 35 years which allowed him and Eileen to travel extensively in South America and Japan, making friends along the way. He was able to retire in his early fifties and relocated to Mooresville, N.C., to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
His children include Meghan (Ronnie), Matthew (Tracie), and Susan (Steve); grandchildren, Rachel, Abbi, Sarah, Kieran, and McKayla; and a great grandson, Bryson. He is also survived by his brother, Brian.
He was preceded in death by his loving bride, Eileen; his mom and dad, Ann and George Long; and his brother, Tommy.
George’s favorite thing to do was spend time with his family, listen to live music, and drink a Guiness! George and Eileen entertained family and neighbors extensively. They hosted many holidays and gatherings at their homes in both New York and North Carolina. They had a love affair that was evident to all who knew them.
George never met a stranger, always making time to smile and wave at any and all children he encountered. He and Eileen spent many Friday nights keeping Rachel, Abbi, and Sarah overnight. George took care of Kieran, along with Tillie, the first year of his life.
He was an amazing caretaker to his wife Eileen, as she struggled through the end stages of COPD. He was so very generous to his family, always helping in any way he could when anyone had a need. George was an extremely positive person and a great listener. He liked to joke for shock value and had an infectious laugh. He was always happy!
