A Connecticut man faces a felony drug charge after being stopped for a traffic violation on Interstate 77 by an Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputy.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Leronte Raynard Myers, 35, of Hamden, Conn., in a news release. 

Deputy C. Moncus, who is assigned to the ICSO Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team, conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling south on I-77 near Tomlin Mill Road for a violation on Wednesday, April16, Campbell said.

While interacting with Myers, who was driving the vehicle, Deputy Moncus observed indicators of deceptive behavior and suspected possible criminal activity, according to the news release. After issuing a warning citation for the traffic violation, the deputy deployed Canine Kash, who positively alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, Campbell said.

During the ensuing search of the vehicle, deputies located approximately 25 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, a schedule I controlled substance, according to the news release.

Myers was taken into custody and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was charged with Felony Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Magistrate Imes set Myers’ bond at $20,000.
