A north Iredell County resident has been charged with concealing or failing to report the death of a child following an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Darren Campbell annnounced the arrest of Alex Holden Best, 19, in a news release on Wednesday afternoon.

The ICSO began investigating on Monday, September 6, after receiving a report about a body possibly being buried behind a residence located off Tomlin Mill Road, Campbell said.

The body was reportedly brought to the home from a location in High Point, according to the news release.

ICSO deputies along with Criminal Investigators and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the residence. A crime scene was established and a search warrant was obtained for the residence. 

When the search warrant was executed, investigators located a shallow grave containing a box holding the remains of a small infant, Campbell said.

Best was interviewed by ICSO investigators and provided a statement about how the remains came to be in the grave behind the residence. The child’s remains were sent to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist for autopsy.

High Point Police investigators located a female in High Point, who is also involved in this investigation. The female gave a statement to High Point Police investigators about how the child’s remains came to be in High Point before being transported to Iredell County by Best, according to the news release.

At this time, the investigation into the child’s death is being conducted by the High Point Police Department due to this being the originating location of the investigation.

Best was arrested by ICSO Warrant Squad deputies on Wednesday. He was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was served with an arrest warrant for felony conceal or fail to report the death of a child.

Magistrate Thompson issued a $10,000 secured bond on this charge.
