Rachel Shirley Jean Poston Canipe, 83, of Statesville, N.C., died Thursday, December 5, 2019, at her residence.

Shirley was born in Shelby, N.C., on January 27, 1936, to the late W.D. “Bill” Poston and Maudie Hull Poston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Canipe, in 2012.

She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she was very active and loved her church family. Shirley was a retired hairdresser and former owner of Northwinds Hair Design, where she enjoyed her customers and family. When her and her sisters were younger, they enjoyed spending time together and having a “girls day.” Gardening and working in her yard brought her a great deal of pleasure.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Canipe Lemons; a son, Richard Canipe (Diana) of Cleveland, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jessica Lemons, Christina Lemons, Connie Canipe, and Richard Canipe II; a great-granddaughter, Cecilia Kennedy; and a sister, Libby Dunnam (Freddie) of Florida.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019, at Temple Baptist Church with burial following at Iredell Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 1 to 2 on Monday prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Temple Baptist Church Building Fund, 205 Museum Rd. Statesville, NC 28625.
