Steve Wayne Matthews, 76, of Statesville, N.C., passed away February 8, 2023, after a brief illness at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C. Steve was born January 10, 1947, in Alexander County to the late James Calvin Matthews and Thelma Dagenhart Bumgarner.

Steve worked as a brick mason, and he was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Branton Matthews; and one brother, Willie Mathews.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Darrell W. Matthews and wife Cindy of Statesville; and one daughter, Crystal M. Cook and husband David of Statesville. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Amber M. Robinson and husband Brandon, Ethan Matthews and wife Morgan, Brayson Matthews, Carrie Durham, and Janet Taylor, and step-grandson, Heath Cook; seven great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brooklynn, Braxton, Brayleigh, Brenlee, Lawson, and Harper; and two nieces, Julie and Jeannie.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 10, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Pastor Brian Douthit will officiate. The Family will receive friends Friday, February 10, 2023, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 848 Pisgah Church Road, Stony Point, N.C.
