A juvenile who brought a firearm to the open house at West Iredell High School has been identified following an investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The ICSO received information on Thursday, August 17, about an individual who brought a firearm onto the campus of West Iredell High, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.
The report was immediately assigned to Threat Assessment Detective H. Little.
During the ensuing investigation, Detective Little learned the incident occurred on Thursday, August 10, during the open house event.
The juvenile who brought the firearm on campus was a former West Iredell student who attended the open house event with friends, Campbell said.
Detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance video from the school. The juvenile suspect and the parents of the juvenile were also interviewed.
As a result of the investigation, detectives determined the juvenile brough a firearm, which was concealed in the waistband of the pants, on campus, according to the news release.
Detectives have petitioned the Department of Juvenile Justice to charge the suspect with Felony Possessing a Weapon on Educational Property.
Sheriff Campbell said the incident served as an important reminder to parents to encourage students to report any suspicious activity to their School Resource Officer or school administration. This can be done in person or on the “Iredell Sheriff” App.
The information shared can potentially save lives and stop crimes from being committed on school campuses, the sheriff said.
If you’re big enough to act like an adult, you’re big enough to be treated like an adult! This tough guy needs to be charged like an adult for this senseless act; and not slapped on the hand like what happens too often.
Arrest his parents. That will get people’s attention. Maybe they’ll start being more conscientious about guns.
