FROM STAFF REPORTS
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction released the latest school performance grades for all public schools on Wednesday.
The A-F school performance grades that schools received in 2022-2023 were affected by the formula used to determine those grades because student performance on the state tests far outweighs the credit schools earn for the progress students make on the same tests from one year to the next. Eighty percent of the grade is for the percentage of tests earning a score of at least grade-level proficient; 20 percent is for growth, measured by a statistical model that compares each student’s predicted test score, based on past performance, against his or her actual result.
A total of five schools earned the top grade (A) and three schools earned the lowest grade (F). Also are included in parenthesis is an indication if the school met, did not meet or exceeded DPI’s student growth goals.)

Overall, this report card is an embarrassment. Now comes the excuses. Public education is failing the investors. (the taxpayers)
A sad showing. Yes, the schools are failing. But who’s to blame? We are an anti-intellectual society, treating our teachers like “millhands” of the past. We’re stingy taxpayers who are reaping the results of the miserly seeds we sow. Our commissioners and school board do more harm than good. They too are products of our poor system. It almost takes a martyr to commit to professional teaching in this system. ☹️
No. Look at the report. Teachers are getting paid plenty. Administrative roles take the lions share. The breakdown of how ISS spends its money is on the NC DPI site. It’s not spent on our kids.
Privatize the whole system and bar the teachers union. Watch the grades go up. So much money is wasted and yet they ask for more. The Governor criticizes the successful volcher program because the state lose control. The voucher program saves the taxpayers money but the Governor won’t admit that. The liberal agenda isn’t working. Too much emphasis on self expression and not enough on morals and discipline. The report card confirms that. The middle schools have the worst grades. They need the most restructuring. Parents need a union!
So much disinformation in your response, I don’t know where to start. 1) NC has no teachers unions. 2) Avg teacher pay in NC is $55k. They aren’t getting rich. 3) Vouchers will take $ ($400 million proposed) OUT of public schools. 4) Private and charter schools are accountable to no one. There are no standards at all. In addition, many don’t provide transportation and most don’t accept children with disabilities. Where do the poor and disabled go to school? 5). There is no “liberal agenda” in our public schools. Each state devises its own curriculum. Last I knew, the GOP has governed NC for the better part of 15 years.
I don’t know what kind of mental gymnastics you did to come up with this comment. You think there is liberal control of your schools in Iredell County? Is that only because they are underperforming? Privatizing schools is literally the last thing you would want to do to improve the quality of schooling, they barely have to follow any standards at all, and the administrators pocket the lump sum of the money going into those schools.Their equipment and standardized scoring is almost ALWAYS lagging behind. The only thing that saves them is that the people that can afford to attend those private schools are rich, and can afford extra help (tutors, SAT classes, etc.). When they get through to college on their legacy free entry, they get laughed at by the students that had to work and actually learn to get there. And their grades struggle until they pay someone else to do their assignments. Your answer is pure delusion.
Teaching is not in the hands of the teachers anymore! There are more stupid restrictions than helpful solutions. Really sad. Yes the school boards are worthless.
I’m a Sub for ESS in ISS. I can tell you the teachers hands are tied. Not only do the students disrespect them so do the parents. It’s not all students or parents, and thank you to the parents who have taught your children respect, responsibility and consequences for not doing what they’re told. Thank you for the parents that have taught your children to stand for the pledge of allegiance to the flag. It is disrespectful to our country and our veterans to do otherwise.
