The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Statesville invites the community to help kick off the Relay For Life season on Thursday, January 9, at Monticello United Methodist Church.
Organizers are launching this year’s Relay season with games, event information, a crock pot cook-off, fellowship, and more. The fun starts at 6 p.m.
The Relay For Life movement continues to be the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer. Since 1985, Relay For Life events have raised nearly $6.5 billion for the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer.
“I participate in Relay for Life to provide opportunities for people who receive a devastating cancer diagnosis to receive necessary education, information, and assistance during this life-changing event in their lives,” said Statesville native and cancer survivor Melissa Haines.
This year’s Relay For Life event will be held on Friday, May 8, at Signal Hill Mall.
The Relay For Life of Statesville is an opportunity to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event lasts into the night and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates that one out of three people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
Funds raised at Relay For Life events help the ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research and gives cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support.
