FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a significant drop in crime in its jurisdiction between 2014 and 2022.
According to data from the 2022 Uniform Crime Report, during that period, the overall crime rate dropped by 55 percent and the violent crime rate has declined by 14.7 percent. Property crime decreased by 59.4 percent during the same time.
The crime rate and violent crime rate are based on the number of reported crimes per 100,000 residents. The data is for the unincorporated areas of Iredell County and does not include crimes that occurred in Mooresville, Statesville and Troutman.
Sheriff Darren Campbell attributed the reduction in crime to the ICSO’s focus on targeting the sale of narcotics and career offenders.
“The reasons for this significant decrease in crime year over year are numerous and include the continuation of targeting career and repeat criminals, taking a proactive stance on illegal drug sales, and being attentive to our community when citizens provide us with information,” Campbell said.
“Our numerous community outreach programs and social media outlets are paying huge dividends in lowering crime rates and maintaining the trust we have built with our community here in Iredell County,” he added.
