Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County hopes to open new facility in 2021

The Town of Mooresville Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a conditional rezoning request from Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County to construct a Hospice House at 1321 Mecklenburg Highway.

During Monday’s board meeting, two residents of the adjacent Foxfield subdivision expressed some concerns about maintaining a natural buffer between the new facility and their neighborhood. Hospice has an agreement to purchase the 5.15-acre site from Frank Knox. 

Hospice CEO Terri Phillips assured the residents and the town board that the treeline separating the property would be maintained and additional landscaping would be added to create a peaceful and serene environment for the nonprofit’s patients and preserve the privacy of neighbors.

“The Mooresville Hospice House will feature a warm and home-like environment with 10 individual rooms to serve patients who are nearing end of life,” Phillips wrote to neighbors last fall. “As with the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, emphasis is placed on maintaining a peaceful and comforting experience for those served by the house, as well as those living nearby. Our patients are transported to the house without the use of sirens, and with just 10 beds, traffic from visitors is minimal.”

Opening a second hospice house would allow residents of South Iredell to be closer to home and shorten the travel time and distance for care-givers and family members who want to visit.

Town staff and the planning board recommended approval of the conditional rezoning request from Residential Mixed Use to Residential Mixed Use with Conditions.

Hospice officials hope to open the new facility in 2021.

Town commissioners and Mayor Miles Atkins said the nonprofit’s services would be an asset to the community.

“I think it’s about time,” Commissioner Bobby Compton said. “You are very welcome in South Iredell.”
