Donald “Don” Colman Mottern, 76, of Mooresville, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2023. He was born on December 16, 1946, in Maryland to the late Robert and Patricia Colman Mottern.
Mr. Mottern was a graduate of the University of Virginia Civil Engineering Department. He was a retired Civil Engineer for Duke Power after 33 years of service. He was a member of Rocky Mount Church in Mooresville. Don was a man with a splendid dry wit, tremendous honor, a wide array of interests and deep love for his family and the friends he chose to be his family. He was an avid trout fisherman, hunter, and cook, and he loved playing on the lake, building projects, canoeing, biking, hiking and snow skiing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Mottern.
Don is survived by his wife of 31 years, Brenda Mottern; daughter, Cheryl Sterling (Travis Sterling) of Caldwell, Idaho; son, Clay Mottern (Tara Seery Mottern) of Laguna Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Blaine Sterling (Christine), Katy Rose (Ben Rose), and Savannah Mottern; brother, Bob (Nancy); mother-in-law, Carol Davenport; great grandchildren, McKenna Smith, Laramie Rose and Waylin Rose; nephews, Bobby Mottern (Lizzy), Dan Mottern (Cindy), Rick Mottern (Emily), Will Davenport (Jackie), and Dustin Davenport (Melissa); nieces, Holly Lane (Chris) and Lindsey Nelson (Ron); sisters-in-law, Donna McKay (Tom) and Becca Shaw (Chas); and numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 8, at 9:30 a.m. in the narthex of Rocky Mount Church. A Celebration of Life Service will be following at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of Rocky Mount Church at 1739 Perth Road, Mooresville, N.C.
