Statesville resident Beverly Maurice has filed to run for a seat on the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.

A Democrat who has significant professional and volunteer experience, Maurice promised to represent all Iredell County residents while working to keep the government “strong, healthy and equitable” if she is elected.

“I see several holes in our county that I’d like to address when I serve on the Iredell Board of Commissioners,” Maurice said in her official campaign announcement. “One hole is our lack of public transportation in and between Statesville and Mooresville. … Yet another hole is not completing the building of the new school while we have new developments being built. I understand these all take a high level of logistics but that does not make them unachievable.”

Three seats will be on the November 5, 2024, ballot. The primary is scheduled for March 5.

Maurice is the first Democrat to file for county commissioner. Candidate filing began December 4 and ends at 12 noon on Friday, December 15.

Maurice said her education, career and volunteer work have positioned her “perfectly at this time for this role.” She earned her undergraduate degree is in therapeutic recreation with minors in biology and psychology from Catawba College in Salisbury. She holds master’s degree in bioethics from Clarkson University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital, N.Y.

She has worked as a developmental therapist for special needs children from birth to age three in Iredell and Davie counties, has experience working for self-funded medical and dental group plans, as an insurance clerk for physicians, and is currently working as a high school substitute teacher.

Maurice has served as the president and lay clergy of Congregation Emanuel for the last eight years. She has also volunteered as a Guardian ad Litem for nine years, co-chairs of Iredell’s Clergy for Healing and Justice Inc. and serves on the Gordon Hospice House’s ethics committee. A Holocaust educator and member of the Committee for Iredell’s Walk to End Alz, she is also a member the Statesville Branch NAACP and a founding member of Statesville’s PFLAG.

Maurice has three adult children, an extra adult child, step-children, two grandsons, two dogs, several grand-dogs, many step grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.

“It would be my honor to serve you, my fellow citizens of Iredell County,” Maurice said.
