Two Statesville men face felony drug charges after leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren announced the arrests of David Khalil Alexander, 21, of Club Drive Statesville, and Amontae Eldred White, 19, of Altondale Drive, Statesville, in a news release Tuesday.
While on patrol on Wednesday, December 7, Deputy S. Smithey came upon a traffic accident that had just occurred on the Interstate 40 exit ramp at Turnersburg Highway, the sheriff said.
The deputy pulled over to assess the situation and ensure no one was injured, but before she could exit her vehicle one of the vehicles drove away, according to the news release.
Deputy Smithey pursued the vehicle until the driver, David Alexander, finally stopped the vehicle in a Circle K parking lot, Campbell said.
During the course of the traffic stop, the deputy located approximately 6.4 ounces of marijuana, $2,947 in cash, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, according to the news release.
Alexander and White were both arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana, Felony Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver a Controlled Substance, Felony Conspiracy to Sell or Distribute a Controlled Substance, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for a Controlled Substance and a misdemeanor drug offense.
Both suspects were transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where Magistrate Callejas ordered both held without bond because they had other pending charges.
White subsequently was released on bond, which was set by a judge. Alexander remained in custody on Tuesday.
