Ruth Hartsell Canup, 96, of Mount Ulla, N.C., passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024. She was born on February 20, 1927, in Oakboro, N.C. to the late Spurgeon and Emma Smith Hartsell.
Ruth graduated from Thomasboro High School in 1944 and then worked in accounting at Southern Manufacturing. She was a church secretary for a long time and played the piano for several churches. Ruth enjoyed playing Bingo and taking her chances at the scratch-off tickets. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hauley Leroy Canup; brothers, Kenneth Hartsell and Denton Hartsell, and son, Darrell Calebro.
Those left to cherish Ruth’s memory are her children, Leonard Calebro (Wanje), Sandy Nance (Scott), Rick Canup (Diane), and Johnny Canup (Jean); daughter-in-law, Donna Calebro; grandchildren, Scott Cook (Alinda), Jeff Cook (Kim), John Canup Jr, (Tasha), Joey Canup, Kristin Dowling (Parker), and Nichole Warren (Ian); 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024.
