Rep. Patrick McHenry presented Congressional Awards to Lake Norman High School sophomore Truett Wolf on Thursday.
The sophomore recently completed the criteria to qualify for bronze, silver, and gold congressional medals. The awards are nonpartisan, voluntary, and noncompetitive.
The program, started in 1979, provides opportunities for young people “to unleash their potential by achieving personal goals focused on volunteerism, character development, and fitness.”
Wolf completed 400 hours of community service by volunteering at two different locations. He tutored young children in golf at The First Tee of Greater Charlotte and helped out at Feed NC in Mooresville.
For personal development, Wolf spent 200 hours working on mental and physical fitness through golf, basketball, and chess.
“I was out there every day, every weekend getting hours,” he said. “For chess, I improved my rating by 1000 points.”
“That’s work, that’s disciplined work,” McHenry said.
To complete his requirements, Wolf also traveled to Montana and camped in Yellowstone National Park.
After he graduates high school, he hopes to attend Duke.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to become a lawyer. It’s my way of giving back to people who can’t help themselves ,” he said.
