Joel Hampton Patterson Jr., 84, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville. He was born on November 10, 1939, in Charlotte, N.C., to the late Joel Hampton Patterson and Dorothy Lloyd Thulin.

Mr. Patterson was retired from Fuchs Lubricants Company. He was a member of the Air National Guard in Charlotte and Central United Methodist Church in Mooresville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Erik Thulin and Grady Patterson.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Fisher Patterson; children, Joel H. Patterson III; daughters, Regan Patterson, Morgan Patterson, Cynthia “Cindy” Champion and husband Monty; sons, Brett Champion and wife Whitney (daughters Caylin, Zoey, Ella and McKinley), Jordan Champion and wife Megan (son Hayes Champion), John Patterson and wife, Sandra (son Noah Patterson), James Patterson (sons Aaron Patterson, Seth Patterson); brothers, Sven Thulin and wife Mary, Lloyd Patterson, Victor Thulin and wife Marsha; and sister, Laura Tench.

Joe had many hobbies and some major accomplishments in his life. He loved the art of woodworking in his shop behind the house and at the young age of 55 had earned his Master Scuba Diving Certification. Joe and wife Margaret loved to travel and have gone from Israel to the Caribbean and all in between. His final accomplishment was to become a lay minister, working with Central United Methodist Church, and becoming a Chaplain for Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Joe loved to tell stories of his days as a Chaplain, which would always bring a smile to his face.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 11, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. with a service following at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Anita Sain and Rev. Gary Sowell officiating.
