A Statesville police corporal was among the law enforcement officers who were wounded while members of the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Task Force were attempting to serve a warrant in Charlotte on Monday, April 29.

Cpl. Casey Hoover, who serves as a member of the task force, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso in an area that was unprotected by his bulletproof vest, SPD Chief David Onley announced in a news release Tuesday.

Hoover was transported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to a Level 1 trauma center in Charlotte, where he underwent surgery. He is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, Chief Onley said.

Hoover has been a member of the SPD for eight years and has served on the task force for two years.

“Cpl. Hoover exemplifies the bravery and resilience of our law enforcement community,” the chief said. “During this challenging time, we kindly request privacy for Cpl. Hoover and his family as he continues his journey to recovery.”

Hoover was one of eight members of the task force who were wounded during the incident on Galway Drive. Four of the officers died as a result of their injuries.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the tragic incident that occurred in Charlotte, NC on April 29, 2024,” Onley said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the U.S. Marshals Service, the N.C. State Department of Adult Corrections, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for their loss of four fallen law enforcement members. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who were lost, and we stand in unwavering solidarity with our law enforcement brethren during this difficult time.
