Dr. Max Walser is retiring from the EnergyUnited Board of Directors after nearly 50 years of service to cooperative members.
Walser, who represents EnergyUnited members in District 2, will step down when his current term ends in September. He has served on EnergyUnited’s board since its inception in 1998 and as board president since 2011. Previously, he served as a board member for Davidson EMC, beginning in 1975. He also served as a director on the EnergyUnited Services Board.
In recent years, during his service as president of the EnergyUnited Board of Directors, Walser prioritized board diversity as a guiding principle to support the cooperative’s vision and mission.
“Max’s contributions to EnergyUnited are immeasurable,” said Thomas Golden, chief executive officer of EnergyUnited. “His leadership, vision and dedication have played a crucial role in shaping our strategic direction and in fostering a culture of diversity, excellence and innovation. We are deeply grateful for his years of service and wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Walser has been instrumental in numerous initiatives at EnergyUnited. A hallmark of his leadership included advocacy for community programs to benefit EnergyUnited members. He retired as superintendent of Davidson County Schools after a 37-year career in education. He has served on the North Carolina Electric Membership Cooperative Board and the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives Board.
“It has been an honor to serve on the Board of Directors of an organization that is so vital to the health and success of our community,” Walser said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that EnergyUnited will continue to thrive and care for members by working together for a brighter energy future.”
Walser is a past chairman of the Davidson County Board of Commissioners and was appointed by former Gov. Beverly Perdue to the North Carolina Economic Development Committee in February 2012. He has served on a variety of boards, including the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Piedmont Triad Partnership, Hospice House Building Fundraising Committee, Davidson County Arts Council, Board of Trustees for Davidson County Community College and Trading Path Association. He is also a past member of several civic organizations and received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from Governor Easley in 2000.
EnergyUnited members will have an opportunity to vote for a new cooperative board member to represent District 2 during the 2024 Board of Directors Election, which will begin on August 9. Nominees for each district will be announced on the cooperative’s website on June 21.
