Barbara Campbell Johnston, 94, of Davidson, N.C., peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Sevya Homes of Mooresville. She was born November 12, 1929, in Cliffside, N.C., daughter of the late Clarence and Mattie Campbell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Reid Johnston; and her brother, Thomas Henry Campbell.

The life of every party, Barbara never met a stranger. With a perpetually open front door, she eagerly awaited afternoon “wine time” gatherings with friends and family at her kitchen table. Born and raised in a boarding house in Cliffside, N.C., she took a keen interest in their tenants’ travels and adventures. This fueled her lifelong passion for travel. Favorite international trip destinations included Germany, Switzerland, England, and Ireland.

A graduate of Charlotte Memorial Hospital’s (now Atrium Health) nursing program, Barbara’s devotion to the care of others extended well beyond her official years of service (Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Private Practice OBGYN, Davidson College Infirmary). She served as Volunteer Coordinator at The Pines at Davidson for more than two decades and was an unofficial neighborhood caregiver well into her 70s. As Barbara was fond of saying, “Once a nurse, always a nurse.”

Most important to her was her family and her tremendous network of friends. She will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished by her survivors, her son, Mitchell Johnston, and his wife Meredith of Mooresville; her grandsons, Campbell and Garrett; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A Celebration of life service will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Cavin-cook Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Sevya Homes and to all of the amazing nurses at Hospice of Iredell for their unwavering compassion and support. Additionally, we would like to thank family and friends who have loved Barbara as we have. She truly treasured time spent with you all. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carolinas Nursing Endowment Fund at atriumhealthfoundation.org.
