Charles Henry Sherrill Jr., 76, of Hiddenite, N.C., beloved father, husband and friend, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at his home after fighting cancer for many years.

Charles was born December 28, 1947, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Charles Henry Sherrill Sr. and Ruth Bustle Sherrill. He was a graduate of Statesville High School, attended Mitchell College and received his B.S. and master’s degree from Appalachian State University in School Administration. While at Appalachian State University, he ran track & field and for many years held the record for pole vaulting.

On July 18, 1969, he married Brenda Lackey Sherrill, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1973. He also served in the National Guard from 1973-1975 and during that time worked at the Pentagon. He was a teacher in Caldwell County at Whitnel, and assistant principal at Granite Falls, Kings Creek and Gamewell. In Alexander County, he was a principal at Ellendale and at East Junior High School. Before retiring, he worked in the central office and was in charge of the after-school programs.

He was a member of Pisgah Methodist Church and also of the Stony Point Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the Gwaltney Ruritan Club and the Lenior Rotary Club. He supported the community in many ways, cooking and mowing yards, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing, while also collecting and hunting for gems and minerals.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Sherrill Parker (Eddie); grandson, Thomas Lee Sherrill (Christina); granddaughter, Annie Marie Parker; great granddaughter, Kassandra Sherrill; and mother-in-law, Mary Mason Lackey. He is further survived by his first cousins, Jeff Bustle and family, Jimmy Ball, and Jamie Ball Stilgenbauer; and two brothers-in-law, Tony Lackey (Lisa), Ronnie Lackey.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristen Lynette Sherrill, who passed July 23, 2024.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Pisgah Methodist Church with Pastor Matt Harrold and grandson Thomas Lee Sherrill officiating. Burial with military and masonic rites will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the church.
