Special to IFN
More than just local bragging rights will be on the line Friday night when the Lake Norman High and Mooresville High football teams square off under the bright lights.
A conference championship hangs in the balance of the game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. at Mooresville High’s Joe Popp Stadium.
The winner will also be awarded the FeedNC Cup.
The FeedNC Cup is part of a new initiative called “Athletes Against Hunger,” an effort by local athletes, coaches and athletics directors to raise awareness about food insecurity in the Mooresville area.
In partnership with FeedNC, Lake Norman and Mooresville students, coaches and athletic directors, along with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, will spearhead efforts and food drives, and help raise awareness about hunger in the local community.
Food insecurity is the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of adequate quality, to meet basic needs. Access to healthy food is essential not only for a child’s growth but for their academic performance. One in five children in North Carolina faces hunger and food insecurity.
“The face of hunger is hard to see. Many families in our community are struggling to meet their basic needs. The philosophy of ‘Athletes Against Hunger’ is the belief that through team unity and action, we can make a tangible difference and ensure that no student or family goes hungry, especially as the holiday season approaches,” said Bonnie Battalia, chief development director of FeedNC.
