The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded the contract for the much-anticipated widening of Highway 150 in southern Iredell County.

The $249.3 million contract was awarded to Charlotte-based Blythe Development during Thursday’s NCDOT Board meeting.

This proposed work involve widening the mostly two-lane highway to multiple lanes as well as improvements to the I-77/N.C. 150 interchange in Mooresville. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, according to the NCDOT.

Sen. Vickie Sawyer (R-Iredell) and Mooresville Commissioner Lisa Qualls, who also chairs the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization, traveled to Raleigh for the meeting.

“This critical project aims to alleviate congestion and improve safety along one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors,” Sawyer said. “Our community has long awaited these enhancements, and we are committed to work with NCDOT as they oversee the construction.”

Qualls and Sawyer expressed their gratitude to the NCDOT for their dedication to this project, especially considering the recent challenges posed by Hurricane Helene.

“I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the NCDOT Board for their unwavering commitment to our infrastructure, particularly during these difficult times,” Qualls said. “The damage caused by Hurricane Helene has placed significant constraints on resources, yet NCDOT is honoring their commitment to projects like the Highway 150 construction.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the NCDOT for their steadfast commitment to our community,” Sawyer added. “The Highway 150 project is a vital step in our efforts to reduce congestion and improve the quality of life for our residents. This collaboration is essential for ensuring that our roads meet the needs of our growing population.”
