Personnel from Cool Springs, Statesville, Wayside, and Ebenezer fire departments, along with the N.C. Forestry Service and Iredell Rescue Squad, responded to reports of a vehicle and multiple hay bales on fire on Chestnut Grove Road near Statesville about 3 p.m. Thursday.

Arriving crews found a van and more than a dozen hay bales on fire. The flames were fed by winds gusting to 19 mph.

Firefighters knocked the fire down and protected other structures. A Telahandler was brought in to break up the hay bales so firefighters could extinguish the blaze.

Cool Springs VFD took control of the operation and released all other companies.
