Richard Johnson was born January 10, 1930 in Eutawville, S.C., to the late Joe Levy and Rosa Lee Nesbit Johnson. He passed away December 17, 2024, at the S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville, N.C.
He moved to New York in the spring of 1956. In 1959 he began studying the Bible and symbolized his dedication to Jehovah along with his wife Emma on January 14, 1961.
Richard took his theocratic responsibilities very seriously. Throughout the years he had the privilege to serve as an elder, presiding overseer, service overseer and school overseer. He worked with the HLC as part of the patient visitation group. He had a deep love for the ministry which was clearly seen in the 29 years he served as a regular pioneer. His love for the friends moved him to always make time for encouraging visits that would build up the congregation. This dedication endeared him to many as he became a spiritual father and grandfather to many in the congregations he served.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Emma Johnson; son Jacob Johnson; daughters, Geraldine Davis, Joan Martin, and Julia Blue; brothers, James Johnson, McKinley Johnson, and Clearence Johnson; and sisters Rosa Bell Robinson and Emma Broughton.
He leaves behind sisters Josephine Davis and Sheila Rivers; a son, Richard Johnson Jr. (wife Leah); daughters, Missy Johnson, Linda Crawley (husband Dennis), Gwendolyn Gilmer (husband Anthony), Erica Harvey (husband James), Amy Watson (husband Philip), and Joslin Johnson; 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
