Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of John Daniel Maxwell, 23, of Claremont Way, Mooresville, in a news release.

About 11:56 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies assigned to the ICSO Community Oriented Policing Unit responded to a reported domestic incident at Maxwell’s home, Campbell said.

After arriving at the residence, deputies determined that Maxwell had fled the scene in a 2012 Jeep Liberty registered to the victim, according to the news release.

Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop at the development’s entrance, but Maxwell accelerated at high speed, swerving off the road multiple times, the sheriff said.

Due to safety concerns, deputies terminated the pursuit while maintaining visual contact with the vehicle. Maxwell continued driving recklessly before fleeing south on Interstate 77, according to the news release.

Meanwhile, deputies at the initial location gathered evidence and probable cause was presented to Magistrate Imes, resulting in warrants being issued for Maxwell on the following charges: Felony Assault by Strangulation, Felony Larceny, Misdemeanor Assault on a Female, Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property, Misdemeanor Flee to Elude Arrest, Misdemeanor Reckless Driving, Misdemeanor Driving While License Revoked and Misdemeanor Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

Deputies located Maxwell a few hours later. He attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended, according to the news release.

He is held at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond. The investigation remains ongoing.

According to the news release, Maxwell was free on a $100,000 bond for an assault charge in Tennessee at the time of his arrest — and he had disabled his ankle monitor. Tennessee authorities confirmed they week seek to extradite him to face prosecution there, Campbell said.
