Agnes Crawford Mayes, 94, of Statesville, N.C., passed away February 14, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House after a brief illness.
Agnes was born in Statesville on September 21, 1930, to James and Nelle Bobbitt Crawford. She graduated from Cool Spring High School and Mitchell College.
Agnes was the first secretary at Cool Spring School and she retired from JC Penney Distribution Center as a unit head. She had 40 years of service in cost accounting and personnel offices.
Family and church were very important to Agnes. She married Ross Mayes in July 1949 and shared 67 years of marriage before his passing in December 2016. She joined New Salem UMC in 1949 and remained a member until her passing.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Drs. Sarah and Sherwood Wolfson.
Surviving are her sister, Betty Crawford; sons, Richard Mayes (Penny) and Steven Mayes (Jan); four grandchildren, Laura Cook (Preston), Jessica Melton (Bryce), Samuel Mayes (Katie) and Georgeanna Cranford (Josh); and five great grandchildren, James Cook, Thomas Cook, Riley Melton, Karmen Cranford and Wyatt Cranford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at New Salem United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Don Haynes and Rev. Tony Matthews officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to New Salem UMC, 155 New Salem Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
