Newton “Marcell” Brown Sr., 69, of Maiden, N.C., and formerly of Mooresville, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Saturday February 22, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones, He was born June 21,1955, in Waynesville, N.C., the son of the late Mary Louise Rathbone and Kenneth Phillip Rathbone Sr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kimberly Annette Wilson Brown of Mooresville, sister Janice Kay Hager of Maiden, sister Kathy Louise Brown of Waynesville, daughter Misty Marie Reid of Troutman, and brother Kenneth Phillip Rathbone Jr. of Mooresville.
Outgoing by nature, Marcell never met a stranger. He loved spending time with his family, working on classic cars, woodworking, and fishing. He loved Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, and Popeye the sailor man.
He was born in Waynesville, N.C., and was raised in Palatka, Fla. He moved to Mooresville with his mother and father when he was a teenager. There he learned the importance of family and friends and fell in love with the love of his life, Kimberly Annette Wilson Brown. He began his career at Bay State Milling Co., where he worked for 40 years and retired in 2012.
With a vast appreciation for nature, Marcell loved to go camping with friends and family. He loved being in the wilderness. He loved going whitewater rafting in Cherokee, N.C., and building bonfires and roasting marshmallows, and telling stories and cracking jokes. He woke up every morning to have a refreshing cup of coffee and watch the sun come up.
Most important to him was his family, and he will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He leaves a long-lasting legacy to be cherished by his survivors, including sons Joshua Brown of Mooresville, N.C., Newton Brown Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., Brian and Rhonda Brown of Palatka, Fla.; sister, Susan and Richard Girgus of Dallas, N.C.; and brother, Thurman and Sheila Brown of Breman, Ga.
The family will hold a private Celebration of Life at a later date.
