Vica Mae Poteat Jordan, 87, of Union Grove, N.C., passed away on February 23, 2025, at her residence.

Vica Mae was born at home to Hugh and Luvella Poteat on July 6, 1937. After graduation from Union Grove High School, she married Joseph “Joe” Jordan in 1958, eventually settling back in Union Grove in the late 1960s to begin their lives of raising children on the family poultry farm.

Vica Mae had a giving servant’s heart, which was displayed in many ways – VBS teacher, youth choir leader, substitute teacher, church cleaner, and a special love of volunteering for the Union Grove Fire Department as President of the Ladies Auxiliary. The many fundraisers she was involved in, especially her work in the kitchen, helped the fire department with a major addition, providing living quarters for the volunteers. Day or night, she would arrive at fires to provide water and refreshments for the firefighters. Her most satisfying work, however, occurred at home, and she worked hard at raising chickens and raising children with a firm hand and a deep desire to raise them right.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and only brother, Hugh Jr.

She is survived by her three children, Layne (Teresa), Dale (Whitney), and Carol Mahaffey (Darrell); six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Agnes Poole, Kathleen Huffman, Charlotte Whitaker, and Pat Welborn, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Sweet Home Baptist Church Saturday, March01, 2025, at 12 noon. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be mailed to Sweet Home Baptist Church, c/o David Trivette, 6017 Hunting Creek Road, Union Grove NC 28689.

Chapman Funeral Home is serving the Jordan family.
