Gary Smith Bentley, 77, of Taylorsville, N.C., passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at his home. He was born October 5, 1947, in Alexander County, the son of the late Smith Howard Bentley and Elsie Childers Bentley.
Earlier in his working career Gary worked in the furniture industry, and then from 1994-2011 he worked for the Alexander County School System as a mechanic. He was a member of Shining Light Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He began with the Sugar Loaf Fire Department in 1976 and served as Captain for 10 years. He enjoyed fishing and eating, especially Mary’s cooking. He liked tinkering with almost anything.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Marie Sprinkle and Ruth McLain.
Those left to cherish and honor Gary’s memories include his wife, Mary Miller Bentley of the home; his sons, Todd Bentley (Crystal) of Alexander County, Mark Bentley (Tina) of Troutman, and Jeff Bentley (Sandra) of Alexander County; his grandchildren, Samantha Bobbitt (Ackzle), Matt Hager (Bethany), Zachary Hagar, Brittny Turner (Casey), Johnathon Bentley, Dixie Sigmon (Brandon), Ashlyn Gordon (Matt), Amy Bentley, Josh Bentley (Alexa), and David Bentley; 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way; his sister, Irene Lewis (Willard) of Hickory; his brother, Ray Bentley of Alexander County; his brothers-in-law, Conley Mecimore and Ralph Miller; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends;
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Adams Funeral Home.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Shinning Light Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Mike Cothren will officiate.
