The Cool Springs Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire on Shady Stream Drive about 3:27 p.m. on Monday, along with the Statesville, Shepherds, Ebenezer and fire departments and Iredell County EMS and Iredell Rescue Squad. Initial reports were that two dogs inside the burning structure.

Arriving units encountered heavy fire from the rear of the structure, firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and knocked down the flames while additional companies searched the structure for possible occupants.

Crews found two unresponsive dogs, removed them from the structure and began giving them air from their own masks while EMS personnel, equipped with specialized pet oxygen masks, took over trying to revive the pups.

After a period time, both dogs started breathing on their own and were taken by a private vehicle to a local veterinarian. One was in serious condition.

The fire was declared under control at 3:48 p.m. No other injuries were reported.

Cool Springs Chief Andy Webster was in command of the operation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
