Jan Campbell Settlemyer, a beloved spirit whose life shone brightly from December 16, 1960, until March 13, 2025, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the warmth of family and friends who cherished her deeply. Born in the beautiful landscapes of Iredell County, N.C., to Kenneth Campbell and Nancy Holland Campbell, Jan embodied a combination of strength and gentleness, intertwining her free spirit with a dedicated heart, particularly for animals.
Throughout her life, Jan carved out a diverse career, navigating the roads as a Cross Country Truck Driver, immersing herself in the art of cosmetology, and flourishing as a homemaker. Her wide-ranging passions found their true expression not just in her work, but also in the affection she bestowed upon her loved ones and the creatures she so lovingly rehabilitated. The antics of animals, big and small —squirrels, skunks, snakes, tarantulas, and even chickens — held a special place in her heart. She was nothing short of a real-life Dr. Dolittle, bringing healing and comfort wherever she was needed.
A memorable presence in any room, Jan was often described as a “Prissy Tomboy.” She balanced her feminine side with an unyielding zest for life, embodying a refreshing authenticity that drew others to her. Her unique spirit thrived in the simplicity of life’s pleasures — basking in the sun at the beach, nurturing her house plants, and adorning her space with vivid purple flowers. These pursuits were hallmarks of her radiant personality, reminding those around her to appreciate the beauty in both the ordinary and the profound.
Jan’s proudest accomplishments remained rooted in her identity as a loving mother and devoted grandmother. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her cherished son, John Saunders, and his spouse Christy, as well as her grandsons, John Marshall and Thomas Marley; brother-in-law, Freddy Settlemyer, and his spouse Jessica; friends, Susan, Sheila, and Mike; and her beloved fur baby, Piper. Each of them carries a piece of her vibrant spirit, forging ahead under the influence of her immeasurable love and encouragement.
Jan’s family extended beyond blood ties, as she fostered deep connections with close friends who became like family, including Wanda Elmore (Terry), Beth Ball (Jimmy), and David Bustle. They shared countless moments filled with laughter and solace, all of which contributed to the rich tapestry of her life.
Jan is now reunited in spirit with her beloved husband, David Settlemyer, and her dear fur baby, Mogli, who wait eagerly in a place of peace.
In her final days, Jan and her family received heartfelt care from the dedicated staff at Gordon Hospice House, a kindness that reflected her own compassion for others. They provided her with comfort, allowing Jan to embrace her departure gracefully.
As we remember Jan Campbell Settlemyer, let us honor her legacy — the memories of her adventurous spirit, her unwavering kindness, and her boundless love for all creatures great and small. She will forever reside in our hearts, an emblem of joy and a testament to the enduring connections we forge on this earthly journey.
