The Statesville Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Tuesday night at the intersection of East Broad Street and Eastside Drive.
The crash, which occurred about 10:09 p.m., involved a Porsche SUV and a motorcycle, police said.
According to the preliminary investigation, a Porsche Cayenne, driven by Henry Baker, 64, of Statesville was traveling west on East Broad Street and attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Eastside Drive.
While Baker was in the left turn lane, a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle operated by Adela Portillo, 21, also of Statesville, entered the intersection, police said.
Baker failed to yield to oncoming traffic, and the front left corner of his vehicle struck Portillo’s motorcycle, according to the news release.
As a result of the collision, Portillo sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.
Further investigation revealed the presence of open containers inside the Porsche at the time of the collision, according to the news release.
Baker was arrested at his residence on Wednesday without incident and has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Failure to Yield the Right of Way, and Possession of an Open Container After Consuming Alcohol.
He was served with the arrest warrant and issued a $10,000 secured bond.
