Mitchell Community College students Catherine Bourdon (Cornelius) and Cristina Jacobs (Mooresville) have been selected as the college’s top nominees for the All-USA Community College Academic Team.
The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence along with leadership and service. Twenty national team members are selected annually in March with each receiving a $5,000 scholarship.
Both Mitchell students’ scholarship applications will be placed in the national pool for this coveted honor.
Bourdon holds an associate in science degree from Mitchell and is currently taking business coursework with a goal of transferring to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in public administration. She aims to be a public servant in a branch of government locally, nationally or internationally. She has a passion for helping others and wants to use those skills in her career.
Bourdon noted that the faculty at Mitchell have made a huge impact on her, and she encourages others to continue their education in a supportive environment like Mitchell.
“Professors who care make a big difference,” she said. “The professors [at Mitchell] care and want to see you succeed.”
Jacobs is pursuing an associate in science degree from Mitchell. She plans to transfer to Western Carolina University to pursue a degree in nursing. Jacobs aims to work in intensive care and ultimately pursue a career as a nurse anesthetist.
She is currently the president of Mitchell’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and is working with Mitchell’s Equity and Inclusion Council to promote diversity and inclusion on Mitchell’s campuses.
“Mitchell is a great place to start,” she said. “Even if you don’t know where you’re going, it’s a great place to start. You will find your passion and a passionate group of people.”
