The Statesville Police Department on Tuesday announced that retired SPD K-9 Argo died at home earlier this month.
Argo, a German shepherd who served the SPD from 2010 until his retirement in 2019, passed away on November 4. He was 11 years old.
After his retirement, Argo remained at his long-time home with Office Mitchell, spending his well-deserved time off relaxing with family.
Though certified as a multi-purpose K-9, Argo was best known for tracking. As a result of his keen scent instincts and his commitment to training with his handlers, he made countless successful tracks that led to arrests, according to the SPD.
Argo and Officer Mitchell, a master trainer and vice president of the United Police Work Dog Association, achieved their Level IV Tracking Certification. They also received an American Police Canine Association President’s Award for Professional Excellence.
“Despite his intimidating stature, Argo was a gentle giant and an overall great dog,” the SPD said. “K-9 Argo will be fondly remembered and greatly missed!”
I hope he got a hero’s burial. RIP Argo.
