A Statesville woman has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of a 54-year-old man.

The Statesville Police Department announced the arrest of Latoya Lynette Smith, 32, in a news release Tuesday afternoon. Her bond was set at $300,000, according to police.

SPD officers were dispatched to a home in the 900 block of Adams Street about 6:40 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report about a trespasser.

When officers arrived, they found the body of Statesville resident Christopher Barber near the driveway, according to the news release. Emergency responders pronounced Barber dead at the scene after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Smith reportedly shot Barber after an “encounter outside her residence,” police said.
