Bubba Kinsler is a sweet, loving first-grader at Central Elementary School who enjoys singing “Jesus Loves Me” and spending time with family.
He is also battling neurofibromatosis, a group of genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow in his central nervous system. His tumors are on his brain and spine, and he’s already endured one brain surgery.
To help his family with the six-year-old’s medical expenses — as well as mission work funded by the congregation — Bible Baptist Church held a barbecue fundraiser on Saturday.
Nick Turner, Bible Baptist’s minister of music, said it was heartwarming to see the community come together for a good cause.
“The funds will go toward Bubba’s family for any medical expenses that aren’t already covered with his insurance and go towards gas from Statesville to Baptist Hospital,” he said.
Melissa Alexander, Bubba’a aunt, said the family is incredibly grateful for the assistance, and explained that Bubba’s challenges extend beyond the tumors.
“Bubba was born premature and diagnosed with autism when he was four,” she said. “He also has ADHD and early puberty.”
When Bubba started having back pain, an MRI showed the tumors and led to the decision to undergo brain surgery.
Now, Bubba has to be careful not to injure his head, and he needs a helper during the school day.
Because of the frequent trips to Winston-Salem for treatment, the money will be a great help to Bubba’s parents, Brian Alexander and Becky Thompson, his aunt said.
“With gas prices that are too high, it’s hard to get him back and forth to his appointments,” she added.
Linda Krider, church secretary, said she thinks the world of Bubba and can’t imagine her church supporting a more worthy cause.
“He’s so sweet and always thinking of other people,” she said.
Krider, a nurse, said the Bible Baptist family is always helping its members, their families, and others.
“We’re just like a family here,” she said.
The other portion of proceeds from the fundraiser will support missionaries in the Philippines, Dominican Republic, and medical missions in the U.S.
Hoke Crider is pleased that his church is serving others.
“The Bible says we should help others in need, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” he said.
Nearly $1,000 was collected from the fundraiser.
I love Bubba & Bible Baptist Church.
