An Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputy died Friday while working at Scotts Elementary School.

School Resource Officer Marty Joe Lewis was serving the staff and students at Scotts Elementary when he experienced “a critical medical incident,” according to an ICSO news release.

School staff members, Iredell County Rescue Squad personnel and various responders from a nearby volunteer fire department, along with Iredell County EMS personnel, attempted to save Lewis by performing CPR.

Deputy Lewis was a 20-year veteran of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office who was dedicated to and loved working with the staff at students at Scotts Elementary, according to the ICSO news release.

“Please join with all of us here at the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office in sending prayers for comfort and strength at this time to Deputy Lewis’s family,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

No funeral arrangements have been made at this time.
