Iredell County commissioners have signed off on a request from the Mooresville Graded School District to apply for approximately $3.2 million public school capital fund grant.

The grant program, which allows for North Carolina school systems to apply for various construction projects funding, requires a 25 percent match, or $808,125, that will be paid for from MGSD’s capital outlay funds.

During Tuesday’s board meeting, MGSD Superintendent Stephen Mauney said that the grants are usually awarded for new school construction. During this funding cycle, the state will consider awarding funds for school renovations.

The superintendent outlined four major projects MGSD will include in its grant request:

♦ South Elementary: Roofing, window replacement, floor replacement, Main Office and Media Center renovations and paving. Grant request: $540,750

♦ Mooresville High: Window replacement, elevator repair, elevator construction, HVAC boiler and chiller replacement, floor replacement, restroom renovations, door replacement, galvanized plumbing and pipe replacement and renovation. Grant request: $1.2 million

♦ Mooresville Middle: Roofing repair/renovations and HVAC replacements. Grant request: $547,500

♦ East Mooresville Middle: Floor replacement. Grant request: $75,000

Mauney said that MGSD does not expect to receive the full grant award, but that any funding will speed up their renovation’s timeline outlined for future years.
