The family of a Mitchell Community College student who died last weekend is honoring his legacy by creating a scholarship.
Gavin Doyle Cox, 22, of Huntersville passed away Sunday, March 20, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. His family has partnered with Mitchell Community College to establish the Gavin Cox BLET Scholarship.
Cox attended middle and high school at Pine Lake Preparatory in Mooresville before graduating from East Carolina University, where he majored in criminal justice. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Mitchell Community College.
He was looking forward to a career in law enforcement. He aspired to give back to the community and to form amazing bonds with his fellow officers and the citizens he served.
“Gavin left an everlasting impression on anyone he met. He will forever be remembered for his radiating smile, his larger-than-life personality, and his infectious energy,” the college said in a news release. “Gavin is also known for being a hard-working individual; sometimes juggling three jobs at a time. He was an early entrepreneur, starting his own lawn business with his brothers when he was ten years old.
Cox’s family established the scholarship with the intention of supporting students pursuing a career in law enforcement. This scholarship will ensure that Gavin’s legacy lives on as the Gavin Cox BLET Scholarship and will impact generations of students to come.
