The Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education reviewed plans for renovations to the old wing at Harmony Elementary School Monday during their Committee of the Whole meeting.
The renovations will allow students to access their classrooms in an enclosed area and create a hallway. Currently, the classrooms at the back of the school building area are accessed from the outside.
The district will also update some of the bathroom facilities, which aren’t up to new regulations and only have one toilet.
On November 14, 2022, the school board selected Pinnacle Architecture to design the renovations at Harmony Elementary.
The estimated cost for the project is $3.2 million.
The board will vote on approving the contract with Pinnacle Architecture not to exceed $210,000 on May 8 at its regular board meeting.
Roofing project
In other matters, I-SS Chief Technology, Facilities and Maintenance Officer Tim Ivey recommended the board approve Ballard Roofing to replace the roof at Facilities and Planning (located at Career Academy and Technical School) in Troutman.
Ballard Roofing submitted the lowest of the three bids ($101,700).
The project will involve replacing the roof that covers the mezzanine and warehouse at Facilities and Planning. It is part of the consolidation project to relocate central office employees from ADR to the CATS building.
The funding will come from the 2022-2023 capital funds budget.
Paving Project
Ivey also presented the bid for repaving the parking lot behind South Iredell High School.
He recommends that the board approve a contract with Carolina Paving, the low bidder, among four companies, with a bid of $189,205.
According to Ivey, the rear parking lot shows numerous signs of major deterioration with several areas representing safety concerns for students, staff, and the community.
Funds will come from the 2022-2023 capital budget.
Both the roof and repaving will be considered for approval on May 8.
Next Meeting
The next meeting is May 8 at Career Academy and Technical School, located at 350 Old Murock Road in Troutman, at 6 p.m.
Harmony is getting screwed again. We were promised a new building — not a band-aid. Our school board member should have stood up for us.
The North End of the County always gets left behind in the facilities our kids and Teachers need. Mooresville and the south end most always go to the top.
