The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred over the weekend in the southern end of the county.
ICSO patrol deputies were dispatched to the scene of a shooting at a makeshift shooting range along a utility line right-of-way near Nance Farm Road on Saturday, Sheriff Darren Campbell said.
When deputies arrived, they located David Shane Nance, 46, who had suffered a fatal gunshot would to the chest, according to the sheriff. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This case was not random, and the suspect and victim knew each other prior to this incident,” Campbell said. “The person who fired the shot is also the person who called 911.”
That shooter is cooperating with investigators, he added.
The scene was secured and detectives assigned to the ICSO Homicide Unit and crime scene investigators arrived and started their investigation. The investigators located and interviewed family members of the deceased as well as neighbors in the area of the shooting.
The case is still under still under investigation.
