Iredell Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Iredell Health System, raised funds for cancer support at its second annual Lights of Love celebrations on November 29 at Iredell Mooresville and November 30 at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville.
The Lights of Love celebrations were free community gatherings to honor caregivers and remember loved ones. Over 130 attendees at the celebrations were treated to music, refreshments, children’s activities and observed the Tree of Love lighting.
Among the musical performances were Lake Norman High School band and North Iredell High School band.
The Mooresville event also featured remarks from cancer survivor, Christy Wiliams. The Statesville event showcased a video about Phillip Elder, who is currently navigating cancer and homelessness.
Judy Porter, Oncology Social Worker and Navigator at Iredell Health System, spoke on behalf of Elder, who could not attend due to an unforeseen illness that morning. Porter spoke about the impact of the Cancer Patient Support Fund and how it helps cancer patients like Elder.
At both events the attendees counted down excitedly as the trees lit up the Mooresville and Statesville campuses. After the tree lightings, attendees gathered outside with candles and joined together in singing “Silent Night.” This beautiful, candlelit moment served as a time of remembrance and honor.
Proceeds from Lights of Love benefited the Foundation’s Cancer Patient Support Fund for Iredell Health System. Cancer has been the leading cause of death in Iredell County for over a decade, and the fund assists anyone undergoing cancer treatment and needing help with transportation, lodging, support group activities, and discretionary support.
“It was an evening to illuminate the spirit of giving and remembrance. Together, we shine a light of hope and compassion for our local cancer patients,” said Jen Balog, executive director of Iredell Health Foundation.
