Registration is underway for the 20th Annual Laura Laws Memorial Golf Tournament at the Statesville Country Club.
The tournament, which is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, is a fundraiser for the Fourth Creek Rotary Club’s Community Fund.
The event honors the life of Laura Thomas Laws, an Alexander County native who died suddenly on July 17, 2003. She played collegiate golf at Wake Forest University and was a 15-time club champion at Statesville Country Club. Her husband Edwin is a charter member of the Fourth Creek Rotary Club.
Since its inception, the event has raised close to $1 million for local charities. Last year’s beneficiaries were Children’s Hope Alliance and Power Cross.
Celebrity golfers for this year’s event are Phil Ford, Bobby Cremins, Tommy Burlenson, Al Wood, Derrick Wittenberg and Jeffery Hammond.
The event includes a putting competition at 11 a.m., lunch at 11:45 a.m., and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner/reception begins at 6 p.m.
The entry fee is $800 for a team of four. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

This is truly a remarkable event. It has raised so much money for local organizations through tireless efforts of individuals who have come back to the task year after year after year. Yes, a remarkable event and it is the definition of “local.”
