FROM STAFF REPORTS
Organizers of the 2023 Iredell County Longest Table event have made arrangements to serve up barbecue chicken, side dishes and desserts for the upcoming gathering at Statesville High School.
That’s no small feat when you’re planning to serve 1,100 people.
The event, which is being orchestrated by the United Way of Iredell County, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23.
The meal is free, and everyone is invited. (A second event is being planned for early October in Mooresville.)
Brett Eckerman, executive director of the United Way, said the Longest Table provides a great opportunity to meet people from across the community and form new friendships. Volunteer table captains will facilitate the conversations and make sure everyone feels welcome.
At the end of the evening, Eckerman hopes participants will feel invested in their community and empowered to help Iredell County reach its potential.
“We want everybody to know they are responsible for our community,” he explained. “Our community is made up of what all individuals put into it.
“We want everyone to make one commitment to what they are going to do to make the community better.”
Each participant will be asked to write down what they can do on a strip of paper. Each table will make their strips into a small paper chain, and al of the small chains will be joined together into one large paper chain at the end of the event.
That chain, Eckerman said, will illustrate that “we’re stronger together.”
Grill 4 God is grilling up the chicken, and Cheney Brothers Inc. is providing the sides and desserts.
