FROM STAFF REPORTS

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Robert William Berry, 56, of Mooresville was fatally wounded by a Mooresville Police Department officer during an incident in the parking lot, police said.

Officers responded to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center about 3:44 a.m. after hospital staff reported that an individual — later identified as Berry — was planning to harm himself in his vehicle in the parking lot, according to an MPD news release.

Hospital security observed Berry put a firearm in his pocket before he exited the building, police said.

After arriving at the hospital, officers observed Berry in the parking lot. He was outside his vehicle and holding a firearm, police said.

Officers instructed Berry to drop the firearm, and he placed the firearm on the ground, according to the news release.

But he then picked up the firearm and posed a threat to the officers, police said.

One of the officers then fired five rounds, causing Berry to sustain multiple injuries, according to the news release.

Officers immediately rendered medical assistance and transferred the individual to the care of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center professionals.

Berry died from his injuries while receiving medical care, according to the news release.

The officer who shot Berry was immediately placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, according to the news release. That is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.

The SBI is investigating this incident simultaneously with an administrative investigation by MPD.
