FROM STAFF REPORTS
A Hickory man was arrested after a homeowner observed someone attempting to break into a vehicle and notified law enforcement.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Kentrel Antwain Overton, 28, of 12th Street Drive NW, Hickory, in a news release Thursday.
ICSO deputies responded to Lewis Ferry Road on Tuesday in response to a report about an individual who was wearing a ski mask attempting to break into a vehicle, Campbell said. The individual who reported the attempted break-in watched the crime a unfold on security camera, he added.
After the deputies arrived in the area, they established a perimeter. Deputy G. Deal began speaking to the victim and obtained surveillance footage of the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle, according to the news release.
Lt. Little located a vehicle that matched the description leaving a neighborhood, Campbell said.
Deputies made contact with Overton, who was driving the vehicle. His clothes matched the apparel worn by the individual in the video, and a ski mask was located in the vehicle, according to the news release.
Deputies conducted a neighborhood canvass and were unable to locate evidence or reports of any additional break-ins.
Deputy Deal arrested Overton and transported them to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was charged with misdemeanor attempted breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, and two driving infractions. Magistrate S.P. Nicholson issued Overton a $2,500 secured bond.
The suspect is on probation for Felony Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver a Schedule VI Controlled Substance and Misdemeanor Hit and Run.
So $2,500 bond is approximately $250 to bail out, then back out selling drugs and breaking in cars. Was already on probation. Our system is working great, isn’t it? And we wondering what’s going on with all the crime. I just hate it for law enforcement. They are doing their jobs to only see these people being released back on the streets within hours. SAD!
