FROM STAFF REPORTS
Statesville police officers are looking for a man who faces charges in connection with a crash that claimed the life of a 30-year-old Statesville man.
The Statesville Police Department has obtained warrants charging Gabino Hernandez Nunez, 31, with felony death by motor vehicle, two counts of felony serious injury by motor vehicle, driving without an operator’s license and reckless driving to endanger.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred about 12:23 a.m. on February 24 near the intersection of E. Broad Street and Cynthia Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a red 1995 Honda Civic and a 2007 Honda Civic were involved in a head-on collision.
The SPD’s Traffic Unit was called in to investigate due to the severe injuries suffered by occupants of both vehicles.
Gabino Hernandez Nunez, who was driving the 1995 Honda, was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by Iredell County EMS personnel. The driver of the 2007 Honda Civic was also transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital by Iredell EMS. Both passengers of the 1995 Honda Civic were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
During the investigation, it was determined that Nunez was traveling east on E. Broad Street when his vehicle crossed over the center line and struck the other vehicle head on, police said.
Officers later determined that Nunez was under the influence and impaired at the time of the collision, and he was subsequently charged with Driving While Impaired.
On February 26, Juvencio Mata Carbajal, one of the passengers of the 1995 Honda Civic, succumbed to his injuries at Carolina Medical Center.
SPD officers, along with officers from other agencies, are attempting to locate Gabino Hernandez Nunez and take him into custody.
The suspect’s last-known address is 2420 Coretta Avenue in Statesville, according to the SPD.
Anyone that has information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Statesville Police Department at (704) 878-3406.
