The Statesville Police Department is investigating a collision in which a skateboarder was fatally injured on Davie Avenue early Saturday morning.
Officers responded to the area near the intersection of Davie Avenue and Ramsey Court about 6:10 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a collision involving a pedestrian, according to an SPD news release.
When officers arrived on scene, they located an 18-year-old Statesville man, who was lying in the roadway suffering from injuries sustained from being struck by a motor vehicle, police said.
The young man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released, pending family notification.
The motor vehicle involved in the collision was operated by Shirley Jean Lyalls, 67, of Statesville. She was still on scene when officers arrived.
The SPD Traffic Unit responded to the scene to investigate. The preliminary investigation revealed that the 18-year-old was traveling west on Davie Avenue on a skateboard, police said. Lyalls was also traveling west on Davie Ave at the time of the collision.
