Each year, schools celebrate National School Breakfast Week in March. Students learned that breakfast gives them a great start to their day and also fuels them for learning. The theme for 2023 was “Dig into School Breakfast.”

Making sure students are nourished and ready to start their day, Troutman Elementary School celebrated National School Breakfast Week earlier this month.

The theme this year was “Dig into School Breakfast.”

In preparation for the celebration, school nutrition employees came up with fun bulletin boards and decorated the serving line in the cafeteria. The breakfast grab-n-go kiosk had a construction theme and staff wore safety vests during breakfast service.

The school’s Fuel Up to Play 60 Leadership Team came each morning to help serve breakfast, hand out coloring sheets to students, and made morning announcements about the benefits of school breakfast.

On Monday, students learned that eating breakfast can make you more alert.

Later in the week, students were challenged to get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day.

The school staff takes pride in ensuring the students also stay active. Students played school breakfast games in PE. In one of the games, they used dice to roll a number. Then they would jump rope, or a hula hoop the number of times they rolled on the dice.

Next, they would run to the center of the gym to get a food item from a basket full of breakfast foods and return to roll the dice again. They did this while listening to the song “Breakfast Burrito.” When the music stopped, the team with the most breakfast foods won.

In another game, the students used pool noodles to tag each other.
