From Staff Reports
Troutman Elementary School students recently teamed up with the American Cancer Society to help in the fight against cancer.
Troutman students raised approximately $800 by participating in the Schools vs. Cancer Program.
PE teacher Donette Clendenin said the school decided to work with ACS because cancer has touched all of us in some way. Participants want to stop this disease in its tracks, she said.
Students raised money by purchasing luminaries, decorating them in honor or memory of a loved one with cancer, and by purchasing strips to make a “life chain,” which shows support for those with cancer and caregivers.
The money that the Troutman Elementary raised will help fund innovative research and by providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It also provides rides to treatment and places to stay for people seeking treatment away from home.
“In short, it helps save lives,” Clendenin explained.
The American Cancer Society Schools vs Cancer program brings education and community service to elementary aged students in a fun and exciting way. It also helps students learn about cancer, steps they can take to reduce their risk of developing the disease, and tips to stay healthy.
Color Run
The school held a color run and walked and ran laps at the Troutman Middle School football field while enhancement teachers sprayed them with colored water. The colors represented the different types of cancer.
